From the Land of Civilization to the Heart of Canada… Egyptian Salt Enters the Streets of Montreal in a Contract Worth CAD 23 Million

A contract to supply approximately 200,000 tonnes of de-icing salt reveals opportunities for Egyptian exports in international markets and highlights competition between local and foreign suppliers

In a notable commercial development Canadian media reported on October 15, 2026 that Selto Distribution had won a contract to supply approximately 200,000 tonnes of de-icing salt to the City of Montreal during the 2026–2027 winter season for a value of approximately CAD 23 million with deliveries scheduled to continue until April 2027 This development comes as the city prepares to face the challenges of snow and ice that recur every year and affect traffic pedestrian safety and the continuity of daily services

The significance of this contract lies in the fact that the salt to be used will come from Egypt through a supply chain managed by a Canadian company rather than through a direct government agreement between Egypt and the City of Montreal According to published reports Selto which is based in Victoriaville in the province of Quebec won the contract following commercial competition with other suppliers including the Seleine mine located in the Canadian Magdalen Islands Reports indicated that the price offered by the local mine was higher than the winning bid while the city clarified that the country of origin was not a criterion in evaluating the bids and that the decision was based on tendering procedures and supply requirements

The value of the contract and the volume of the order reflect the importance of the de-icing salt market in Montreal as the city requires large quantities to treat roads and streets during the winter months Dividing the announced contract value by the approximate quantity of 200,000 tonnes produces an arithmetic average of about CAD 115 per tonne However this average does not necessarily represent the purchase price of the salt from Egypt or the company’s net profit because the total value covers the supply contract and complete published details are not available regarding the cost of the product at the source or the expenses of sea freight storage handling and distribution

According to reports the Canadian company examined different sources of salt including Peru Mexico and Tunisia before choosing Egyptian salt This indicates that the decision was based on a comparison of prices technical specifications and the ability to supply the required quantities Purity levels moisture content and grain size are among the factors that affect the quality of road salt and its suitability for harsh winter conditions The Journal de Montréal reported in an earlier article a statement attributed to the company’s chief executive officer Alain Tourigny indicating that the salt marketed by the company has a purity level of 99.8 percent This information is attributed to the company and is not the result of an independent test published as part of the contract documents themselves

De-icing salt differs from table salt intended for human consumption because sodium chloride is used to help lower the freezing point of water and reduce the adhesion of ice to road surfaces making it easier to remove and improving driving and walking conditions However its effectiveness is affected by temperature road conditions moisture and the method of application Table salt and road salt are not equally suitable for all climatic conditions and when temperatures fall to extremely low levels other materials or mixtures may be required depending on the applicable technical specifications

Transportation represents one of the most important elements in the success of this contract The journey begins at the salt production site in Egypt after which the product is transported by sea to Canada before being stored and distributed to the locations that require it Reports indicate that Selto owns storage facilities in Bécancour as well as another site at the Port of Montreal which helps the company manage its inventory and ensure supplies during periods of high demand This process demonstrates that competition does not depend solely on the price of salt at the source but also includes transportation and storage costs as well as the ability to guarantee delivery of the required quantities on time

The contract carries economic significance for Egypt because it provides an example of one of its natural products reaching an advanced market that requires large quantities meeting specific standards It also highlights the possibility of competing in foreign markets when quality an appropriate price and the ability to meet supply commitments are ensured This experience could encourage Egyptian exporters to explore new opportunities in other markets that require industrial salt or de-icing salt However this development does not automatically mean that future contracts will follow as each tender remains subject to its own conditions prevailing prices and the ability of suppliers to submit competitive bids

At the same time the contract raises a debate about competition between domestic production and imports as selecting a supplier that relies on imports may increase pressure on Canadian producers who bear local production and operating costs On the other hand purchasing authorities seek to secure their requirements at the best possible cost and in accordance with the required specifications For this reason evaluating the contract requires consideration of price quality reliability and supply security alongside the economic effects that may arise for local suppliers

Environmental considerations are no less important than commercial aspects because the use of large quantities of salt may lead to increased chloride concentrations in soil and water as snow melts and salty water runs off It may also contribute to the corrosion of vehicles and certain infrastructure Therefore effective winter management is not limited to securing salt supplies but also includes using appropriate quantities according to weather conditions reducing waste and taking potential environmental damage into account

Despite the importance of the contract some details remain unclear in the published reports particularly the name of the Egyptian producing company the location of the mine or production facility the selling price at the source and the contractual terms between the Egyptian supplier and the Canadian company These details are necessary to determine the economic returns that may benefit Egypt because the announced contract value of approximately CAD 23 million represents the value of the supply contract awarded to the successful company and does not mean that the entire amount will go to the Egyptian exporter

Ultimately this contract confirms that Egyptian products can reach diverse international markets when quality aligns with price and production capabilities are integrated with transportation storage and distribution It also highlights the importance of competition in public procurement and the role that exports of raw materials can play in opening new trade channels The actual results of this experience will depend on successful deliveries compliance with specifications and the ability of Egyptian products to remain competitive in the coming seasons
