The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, represented by the Economic Affairs Sector – Department of Arab Economic Integration, is organizing the first training course on “Green Trade within the Framework of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area,” from October 19 to 22, 2026, at the headquarters of the General Secretariat. The course is being held as part of the activities of the project “Enhancing the Competitiveness of Arab Countries to Improve Access to Global Markets,” within the Aid for Trade (AfTIAS 2.0) program, and is funded by the International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation.
Ambassador Dr. Ali bin Ibrahim Al-Maliki, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Economic Affairs Sector at the League of Arab States, affirmed that organizing the course comes within the framework of the General Secretariat’s efforts to support Arab economic integration and keep pace with the rapid developments in the international trading system. He noted that green trade has become one of the important pathways for enhancing the competitiveness of Arab economies and preparing exports to comply with environmental requirements and standards in global markets.
Al-Maliki highlighted the importance of building the technical capacities of specialized Arab personnel and strengthening cooperation and the exchange of expertise among member states, in a manner that supports the progress of joint Arab economic action and contributes to achieving the objectives of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area.
The course aims to develop the technical capacities of members of the Arab specialized team on green trade, which includes representatives from Arab countries that are members of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area, and to prepare them to play a consultative role by providing technical support and advice to member states, in addition to raising awareness of the concepts, requirements and practical applications of green trade.
The course addresses a number of key areas, including the relationship between international trade rules and environmental measures, the main environmental regulations and requirements affecting international trade flows, and the challenges facing Arab exports in accessing global markets. It also examines mechanisms for integrating green economy standards into the Greater Arab Free Trade Area framework, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of Arab countries and supporting their trade and investment opportunities.
The organization of the course comes within the framework of the project’s action plan for the first year, which aims to integrate green economy standards into the Arab trade system and enhance the readiness of Arab countries to address challenges related to environmental measures and international trade, thereby strengthening their ability to keep pace with global transformations in production and trade patterns.
The course represents the launch of a specialized training program extending over two years, comprising a series of programs and training courses aimed at qualifying members of the Arab specialized team and enabling them to perform their consultative and awareness-raising roles at the national and regional levels, thereby contributing to supporting Arab economic integration and strengthening the presence of Arab exports in global markets.
