Details of the Incident

The incident occurred at approximately 4:00 p.m. local time on Saturday, October 17, 2026, when a fire broke out in the training area at Wainwright Military Base during a live-fire military exercise known as APOLLO SHOOTER.

Approximately 85 soldiers were participating in an intensive combat training exercise as part of the activities of the 3rd Battalion of Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry when strong winds and a sudden change in wind direction contributed to the exceptionally rapid spread of the flames.

According to military statements reported by Canadian and international media, wind speeds reached approximately 96 kilometres per hour, while the fire travelled a distance of nearly one kilometre in an extremely short period, making it difficult to contain and resulting in fatalities and serious injuries.

Military and civilian emergency response teams, firefighters, ambulance crews and medical personnel responded to the incident, while the injured were transported to healthcare facilities in several cities across the province of Alberta to receive the necessary treatment and care.

Investigations are still ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the outbreak of the fire and the reasons behind its rapid spread.

The Global Forum for Journalism and Media affirms its full solidarity with the families of the victims and the injured, as well as with all members of the Canadian Armed Forces, during this painful humanitarian tragedy.

The Forum also expresses its deep appreciation for the efforts made by rescue teams, firefighters, ambulance crews, doctors, nurses and all other personnel involved in responding to the incident and providing care to the injured under extremely difficult circumstances.

The Forum commends the expressions of solidarity demonstrated by Canadian officials and citizens towards the families of the victims and the injured, affirming that standing by the affected families and providing them with the necessary support constitute a humanitarian and moral duty in such circumstances.
