Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the Spanish right-wing candidate for prime minister, has stated that Spain, which is co-hosting the 2030 World Cup alongside Portugal and Morocco, should withdraw from the tournament’s organisation if it does not host the final.
The leader of the People’s Party, which is leading opinion polls ahead of the November 29 elections, said during his appearance on the television programme “El Chiringuito” on Thursday evening that the World Cup final should be held “where it is fair, where it is appropriate and where there can be no doubt: in Spain”.
Asked whether, if he became prime minister, he would call for Spain to withdraw its bid to host the World Cup if Morocco were awarded the final, Feijóo gave a decisive answer: “Yes. The answer is yes”.
On Friday, Feijóo posted a message on the X platform, accompanied by a link to the interview, writing: “Restoring our country’s pride also means not allowing anyone to walk all over us… The world’s leading football power cannot be humiliated”.
Spain and Morocco are competing to host the final. Madrid is backing the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, home of Real Madrid, while Morocco is relying on its project to build a stadium with a capacity of approximately 115,000 spectators in the Benslimane area, near Casablanca.
Last September, Fouzi Lekjaa, president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, confirmed that this globally anticipated match would take place in Morocco, “whether some people like it or not”, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
For its part, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) confirmed at the time that no decision had yet been made on the matter.
