A well-informed Palestinian source revealed that the Palestinian Authority had arrested a group of land and real estate brokers in the city of Jericho, along with others from the Hebron and Jerusalem governorates.
The source confirmed that the detainees were being questioned over their alleged involvement in the transfer of eight homes to settlers in Jericho through what were described as deceptive sales transactions.
The source stated that the arrested brokers had been remanded in custody for 15 days as part of ongoing investigations aimed at uncovering the circumstances of the case and identifying its possible extensions into other governorates.
The source explained that the homes had been sold through deceptive methods. The brokers approached the homeowners and persuaded them to sell their properties, which were allegedly at risk of demolition by the Israeli army on the grounds that they had been built without permits in an area classified as “Area C”.
They led the owners to believe that the buyer would be a Palestinian figure from within the 1948 territories and that legal proceedings would be initiated through Israeli courts to halt the demolition orders, prompting the owners to agree to the sale.
These measures come following reports by Israeli media outlets, including the newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, which revealed that settlers had taken control of the homes under the pretext of completing secret purchase transactions.
The eight homes are located on the outskirts of Jericho. The settlers claimed that the properties were situated in areas they consider to belong to the state.
The move is considered a historic precedent, as it marks the first time settler families have moved into homes in Jericho since the signing of the Oslo Accords. Their entry was accompanied by security preparations and the presence of teams assigned to protect the settlers.
