The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Nabil Fahmy, has appointed Mr. Zeid Al-Sabban as his personal envoy for Sudan affairs, as part of the League’s efforts to support initiatives aimed at ending the war and strengthening prospects for a political settlement to the Sudanese crisis.
The appointment aims to intensify contacts with the relevant Sudanese parties, bring their positions closer together, and help create the conditions for launching an inclusive national dialogue led and owned by the Sudanese themselves, while coordinating with regional and international partners, particularly the parties involved in the Quintet Mechanism.
The decision comes within the framework of the Arab League’s commitment to strengthening its diplomatic role in addressing Arab crises and intensifying its good offices in support of political solutions, in a manner that preserves Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and national institutions, while contributing to security, stability, and alleviating the suffering of the Sudanese people.
Zeid Al-Sabban has extensive experience in Sudanese affairs and issues related to the Horn of Africa. Since 2017, he has served as Director of the Sudan and Horn of Africa Department at the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States. Over the years, he has participated in the League’s efforts to support dialogue and communication with various Sudanese components, in addition to representing the League at meetings of the Quintet Mechanism and regional and international consultations concerning the Sudanese crisis.
