Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi reiterated on Wednesday his country’s rejection of any attempts to displace Palestinians from the Gaza Strip or liquidate the Palestinian cause, during his meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Cairo.
Al-Sissi’s comments came amid repeated Israeli calls to empty the Gaza Strip of its residents, nearly three years after the start of Israel’s war on the territory.
In a statement, the Egyptian presidency said that al-Sissi reaffirmed “Egypt’s firm position rejecting the displacement of the Palestinian people or any attempt to liquidate the Palestinian cause.”
The statement added that Egypt continues its efforts to ensure the implementation of the agreement to end the war in Gaza, reached last October, and to ensure that all parties comply with its provisions. These efforts include ending the escalation, ensuring the flow of humanitarian aid, and creating conditions for a recovery phase.
Al-Sissi’s remarks came hours after Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that the army was prepared to “eliminate Hamas” and implement what he described as an “emigration plan” in the territory, which is home to around two million Palestinians.
The Palestinian president also warned against attempts to “separate the Gaza Strip from the West Bank,” as well as against dividing the West Bank into two separate areas, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa.
Since the outbreak of the war in 2023, Egypt has repeatedly announced its rejection of any proposals to displace Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, after the idea was put forward by U.S. President Donald Trump.
