Does the Expanding African Presence in the “International Energy” Sector Guarantee Real Influence in Decision-Making?.. Study Reveals the Details

A study published by the Pharos Center for African and Strategic Studies examined the limits of African influence in decision-making on the global energy file following Nigeria’s accession to the association of the International Energy Agency, joining South Africa, Kenya and Senegal among the countries associated with the Agency.

The study explained that Nigeria’s accession strengthens the continent’s presence within international platforms to raise pressing issues, foremost among them addressing energy poverty, financing infrastructure, and providing clean cooking solutions for nearly one billion people in Africa who lack access to them, in addition to emphasizing the right of African countries to benefit from their oil and gas resources alongside the transition toward renewable energy.

Despite the importance of these developments, the Pharos study warned that increased numerical representation and individual participation by countries does not automatically mean greater influence in shaping global energy governance rules or determining its priorities.

It emphasized that transforming African presence into effective institutional influence requires close coordination among African countries and the formulation of a common agenda that reflects sustainable development needs and issues related to a just transition.

The study pointed out that Nigeria’s accession opens a broad opportunity on which the continent can build to secure greater space in international decision-making circles, stressing that Africa’s true weight will be determined by its ability to leverage these institutional frameworks to mobilize financing and provide reliable energy to all its peoples.
