A delegation from the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, represented by the Department of Women within the Social Affairs Sector, is participating in the activities of the Women, Peace and Security Week from October 25 to 30 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, including the open debate session of the United Nations Security Council on Women, Peace and Security, within the framework of efforts aimed at enhancing the full, equal and meaningful participation of women in mediation, conflict prevention and resolution, and peace-making and peacebuilding efforts.

In this context, the Department of Women at the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, in cooperation with UN Women, organized on October 28, 2026, a high-level event entitled “From Regional Vision to National Action: Strengthening National Networks of Women Peace Mediators in the Arab Region,” in cooperation with the UN Women Regional Office and with the participation of representatives of Arab states, members of the Arab Network of Women Peace Mediators, ambassadors and representatives of foreign countries, including Germany and Finland, as well as representatives of regional and international organizations.

The event aimed to support the efforts of member states to establish and develop national networks of women peace mediators, introduce the “Guiding Model for the Statute of National Networks for Women’s Mediation,” prepared by the League of Arab States in cooperation with UN Women, exchange experiences and good practices regarding the institutionalization of these networks and ensuring their sustainability, and enhance coordination between national institutions and regional and international partners.

Ambassador Osama Abdel Khalek, Permanent Representative of the League of Arab States to the United Nations and Head of the League’s Mission in New York, affirmed in his opening speech during the event that the escalation of conflicts and crises in the Arab region requires activating multi-track mediation and strengthening integration among international, regional, national and local efforts.

He pointed out that women’s participation in mediation and peacebuilding is an essential necessity for addressing the root causes of conflicts and achieving sustainable peace, explaining that national networks represent an institutional mechanism for enhancing coordination among the various tracks of mediation and connecting women mediators at the local level with national, regional and international institutions concerned with peacebuilding.

For her part, Minister Plenipotentiary Douaa Fouad Khalifa, Director of the Department of Women at the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, emphasized in her remarks during the event the importance of strengthening the role of Arab women in mediation, peacemaking and peacebuilding, highlighting the League’s key efforts in this regard, foremost among them the establishment of the Arab Network of Women Peace Mediators mechanism in 2020, the adoption of its strategy and action plan in 2021, and the preparation of the guiding model for the statute of national networks of women peace mediators.

During the open debate session of the Security Council on Women, Peace and Security, Ambassador Osama Abdel Khalek affirmed, in the statement of the League of Arab States, the need to bridge the gap between international commitments and the actual implementation of the Women, Peace and Security agenda, particularly in light of the armed conflicts and humanitarian crises affecting the Arab region, foremost among them the continuation of the Israeli occupation and violations against the Palestinian people, in addition to the crises in Sudan and Yemen.

The statement stressed the importance of strengthening the role of women as partners in maintaining and building peace, activating their role in mediation and decision-making positions, providing sustainable financing for the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security agenda, supporting national action plans and local women’s organizations, as well as strengthening the protection of women and girls and holding perpetrators of violations accountable.

It affirmed the continuation of cooperation with the United Nations, member states and regional and international partners, in order to translate the objectives of Security Council Resolution 1325 and relevant resolutions into tangible results, ensuring women’s participation as essential partners in conflict prevention, peacemaking and building a safer and more stable future.
